I'm currently studying a degree in ecology after leaving a ten year career in IT. I have a fairly recent interest in the environment generally, and dream of living in a self-sustaining community in the hills.

Some photos from a walk yesterday.

A Damselfly

Common Spotted Orchid

Bladder Campion

A pretty little yellow flower. I think rose family, but not completely sure.

A rose with a strange growth of fuzzy red and green hairlike strands. If anyone know what happened here, or if this is somehow normal, I'd love to know...

...update: Thanks to Ryquail for explaining this. It's a cellular proliferation, or gall, caused by a parasitic wasp.

Here's a closer shot. I think the lighting of this is rather flukey; my wife and I are currently arguing over who took this photo. You can see mini thorns on mini stems; it looks like the kind of bush you'd have to fight through to get to sleeping beauty.

A rather amazing product of evolution, I think. To be able to manipulate the cellular structure of a plant to grow yourself a home. Which leads me off on a tangent. I find it mildly amusing that every other species in this country can make it's home wherever it finds a suitable habitat (albeit perpetually marginalised), whereas us humans have to mortgage our lives away and adhere to strict planning laws. Civilisation sure has it's downsides.

Here's my latest artistic effort. The colours and theme were inspired by a visit to Frannyy's page. I did it in photoshop, using just two colours on a black background.

Here's a B&W version. I think the trees look more like trees, but I guess it defeats the point of using complimentary colours.

"The fairways were watered with weedkiller instead of water."

How do you manage that?! I'm guessing someone is now without a job.

"The heart asks pleasure first" again, this time on the piano as intended. This sends shivers down my spine.

"The heart asks pleasure first" is one of my all time favourite pieces of music. Played here by Zack Kim on two guitars simultaneously. This guy is a genius and captivating to watch.

Are humans smarter than yeast? From the look of most of the people I see on the street today, I'd say it's very unlikely. This is a succinct documentary highlighting the problems with exponential growth.

A student receives 2 out of a possible 27 marks for writing "fuck off!" as an exam answer. He would have got only 1 mark, had it not been for his imaginative use of the exclamation mark.
